The introduction of invasive marine species to new environments is a major threat to the world’s oceans.

The introduction of harmful aquatic organisms and pathogens to new environments had been identified as one of the four greatest threats to the world’s oceans.

Ballast water is routinely taken on by ships for stability and structural integrity. It can contain thousands of aquatic microbes, algae and animals, which are then carried across the world’s ocean and released into, and endanger, new ecosystems.

The international Convention for the Control and management of ships’ ballast water and sediments (BWM Convention), requires ships to manage their ballast water to remove, render harmless, or avoid the uptake or discharge of aquatic organisms and pathogens within the ballast system.

Iron pump has since the BWM convention entered into force on the 8 September 2017, been working together with some of the leading manufactures of ballast water treatment system, to ensure that our environmental ecosystem is protected.
